Refund/Cancellation Policy

Register online at www.bedfordrecreation.org or in person, by mail or by fax. Registration form is in this brochure for non-online registration. Tuition must be paid at the time of registration. We do not prorate. We accept VISA, MasterCard, AmEx and Discover. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Bedford. There is a $25 penalty fee for returned checks. Those requiring special assistance, please contact the Recreation Director.

Notice must be given 5 business days prior to program start for refund. If the required notice is given refunds will be issued less 10% of the cost of the program. Medical refunds given after a program has begun will be prorated and the 10% fee will be charged. Other exceptions are noted in program descriptions.

Financial Aid For consideration, please submit the Financial Assistance Form and Registration form. Forms can be found on our website.

Scholarship Fund In order to continue offering quality programs at affordable costs, please consider donating to our scholarship fund. Bedford Recreation's goal is never to turn away an interested participant due to economic hardship. With your help of $5, $10, $25 (or more!), we will be able to continue this practice.

Food & Beverage Fermented Pickle Workshop Instructor: Emily Makrez, MS Owner of F-Word Farm (Farming, Foraging and Fermenting) Come show yourself some love and learn how to make probiotic pickles for your health and happy taste buds. You will learn how to pickle anything! Emily Makrez will show you how to pickle what's in season to make the most of your veggies, capture gut-healthy microbes & prevent food waste. This will include the basic science of fermentation and methods so you will leave with the knowledge and confidence to be able to safely ferment practically anything! Leave knowing the difference between a vinegar pickle and a fermented pickle. You will make your own fermented pickles (e.g. carrot or beet pickles) and take home your very own jar. We will talk about the benefits of lacto-fermented food & how they are a benefit to our overall health. Samples will be provided! Please bring a knife, cutting board and a scale that weighs in grams (if you have one). Class held at 12 Mudge Way, Room 152. Specialty Coffee Tasting & Roasting Experience Instructor: Paul “Del” Delmonico, Owner/Roaster Del’s Coffee Roasters Coffee is love! Learn where specialty coffee comes from, how it is processed, graded, and roasted, then taste a few different types. After the group has decided which coffee they like the best, we will fire up the roaster and develop a batch of freshly roasted beans. After they have cooled, we will bag them and everyone will leave with a 12 oz. bag of their own freshly roasted coffee. Stay after and go have lunch at one of the many great downtown Waltham restaurants! Class held at Del’s Coffee Roasters, 100 Felton Street, Suite 105, Waltham. Regional Italian Pasta Sauces Instructor: Diane Manteca, Professional Chef Eating the same old pasta sauce can be boring, so let’s jump in and try some new ones out! In this class we will prepare sauces from different regions of Italy, and pair up the proper store bought pasta to serve them on. Join Chef Diane and learn to cook her favorite cuisine! You will be making Quatro Formaggio with Speck (smoked prosciutto), from Emilia Romagna in the Northern part of Italy. Brown Butter Sage Sauce from Tuscany, Rustic Meat Ragu, from Orvieto, Umbria, and Amatriciana Sauce from the Campania region. Finish up with a wonderful Walnut-Gorgonzola sauce from Venice. Go away with exciting new recipes to sauce your pasta! Please bring an apron, and take out containers for any leftovers. Ingredients fee $15, payable to the instructor at class. Age 16+ (min 5/max 12) Thursday, February 15, 6:30-9:00pm Fee: $60 Diane has been a professional chef for thirty-four years, working in high end gourmet establishments as well as catering. She owned the Brickyard Café in Cambridge, an eclectic and popular café style restaurant and Sassy River Sauces, a specialty food company, selling at farmer’s markets and major food establishments. Diane has co-authored a Zone cookbook about healthy eating and she worked as a food consultant and developed recipes for a major specialty food company. She is now a personal chef with clients in the Boston area. Her teaching career spans 30 years, with Italian cooking her specialty. Indian Cooking Using the Instant Pot Instructor: Sandhya Rege Nadkarni, of INDFUSED Cooking Classes In this interactive class, we will make a hearty, delectable Curried Lentil Soup with carrots, spinach and coconut milk and savor a one pot meal of mouthwatering Basmati Rice Pullav with veggies. Learn about the ingredients, spices and spice mixes, from sourcing to storing them, the tips and techniques that will help you gain the confidence to recreate these recipes on a regular menu rotation. This class is a two for one! Get to know the Instant Pot and how to make authentic, flavorful and timesaving Indian dishes using the Instant Pot. All skill levels welcome. We will gather around the table to savor our creations, and for discussions and questions and answers. Ingredient fee of $20 payable to the instructor at the class. Sandhya Rege Nadkarni has been teaching public and private cooking classes for over 12 years. She creates content and develops authentic Indian and innovative fusion recipes for her popular blog INDFUSED @indfused.com which also offers branded online products, including spices and recipe kits. Be Creative Pysanky: Painted Easter Eggs Instructor: Hanka Robertson Pysanky (pee-san-key) are decorated eggs created by using a written-wax batik method with traditional folk motifs and designs. In this workshop, you will learn how to draw on a whole plain white chicken egg with a special pen (kistka) and melted wax, then dye the egg with special dyes. The drawing and dyeing are repeated several times as each layer of the design is applied until the egg is finished at which time the egg is blown out, the wax removed, and a ribbon is threaded through. Everyone will receive an egg to work on and a kistka to use. Hanka will share a short history of Pysanky, instructions with an explanation of the process, motifs and pictures for design inspiration. She will provide information on how to care for the completed egg, and provide a container in which to take the egg home. All supplies are provided. Thursday, March 14, 6:30-8:30pm Fee: $50 Hanka was born in Slovenia and as a child learned to make Pysanky from her mother who was from the former Czechoslovakia where making Pysanky every Eastertime was a tradition. Hanka is an avid Embroiderer and a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and the New England Lace Guild.

Be Creative Fun Night Out at Tiny Tile Mosaics! Friday, March 1, 7:00-9:00pm Tiny Tile Mosaic Studio, 37 Central Square, Chelmsford Center Cheers to a creative evening out! Grab a friend or a few and come create a set of mosaic glasses. You can choose from a pair of wine, martini, margarita, and champagne glasses. Included will be tea, water, chocolate and a nice snack box from Graze with cheese, crackers, fruit and veggies. You are welcome to bring along a beverage of choice too! Start out at one of the many great restaurant options in the center and make it a full night out of fun. A take-home grout kit is included in this class or leave it with us to be professionally grouted for an additional $10.00. Please bring cash if you would like to choose this option. Ages 18+ (max 8) Fee: $69 Tiny Tile Mosaics is owned by Crystal D’Abbraccio, an artist that finds great pleasure in teaching mosaics to diverse learners of all ages. She enjoys creating and instructing others how to use mosaics as a way to inspire and spread joy to communities everywhere. Furthermore, she believes that mosaic art can also encourage healing from trauma, illness and loss. ZenAnimals & ZenGems II: Going beyond the basics of Zentangle, we’ll create compositions using animal silhouettes as the starting place. You may use your own animal, or the ones provided. Include ZenGems, a colorful addition using Prismacolor pencils, bring sparkle and jewel-like depth to your animals. All sessions are recorded so you do not need to be present at the live class to participate. Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, 1/17-1/31 Fee: $65

AlphaZen: Zentangle® Letterforms: Using letters as a starting off point, go beyond the basics of Zentangle and create amazing art. Letterforms may be the “string,” or provide the focal point of the composition. Previous experience with the Zentangle method is recommended. Take the process farther, or stay close to the basics, it is up to you. Relax, focus, trust your creativity and have fun. All sessions are recorded so you do not need to be present at the live class to participate. Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, 2/7-2/21 Fee: $65 Susan was born and raised in Massachusetts where she was constantly drawing, painting, and making things. She earned a B.S. in Design from Brigham Young University, a Post Baccalaureate Certificate from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,a Masters in Museum Studies from Harvard and is a certified Zentangle® Teacher. She has studied with Kathleen Conover, James Toogood, and Marie Natale combining techniques from each into her own style. Be Creative Slow Stitch Workshop Instructor: Lisa Magnuson, Fiber & Felting Artist Join Lisa for an introduction to slow stitching, a creative textile art where you will begin with fabric, needle and thread and start creating. Slow stitching is a combination of different forms of hand stitching. Taking influence from Japanese Boro and Sashiko, Indian Kantha, European embroidery, turned into its own version of hand stitch work. Slow stitching is a good mindfulness activity to enjoy one stitch at a time. In this workshop you will create a journal cover or artwork that can be framed or mounted onto canvas. There will be a $15 materials fee paid to the instructor at class; includes all supplies and tools to complete the project. This class in collaboration with Bedford Arts and Crafts Society. She also loves teaching and helping others learn these arts. Lisa created a series of “I Made It” workshops in connection with the Chelmsford Center for the Arts, and offers workshops at the New England Botanical Garden at Tower Hill and the Old Mill House Coffee in Chelmsford. This past November, Lisa taught at the SewMagical Expo in Orlando, Florida. She is now thrilled to be offering programs at the Bedford Recreation Department. Beginner Sewing Crash Course This is an intensive session on how to use a sewing machine, troubleshoot possible problems and jams, how to use different stitching techniques and create a quick project. Beginner Sewing Class Get a thorough introduction to basic sewing and garment construction skills and theory with this Basic Sewing class! Over the course, students will become familiar with different machine stitches and their functions and maintenance, the use of chalk, rulers, scissors, & pins, different hand seams and finishes, attaching buttons, hooks & eyes, and elastic, and how to create a project from a concept to a pattern to a finished product. Most materials provided, Fabrics can be purchased in the class or brought from home. Bring your own machine or rent at class for $25/session. Home Décor Workshop We will make pillows with embellishments, like cords and fringes, including advanced patterns and fabric manipulations. We will also learn how to create drapes with pleats, and roman shades. $10 for sewing supplies, fabric can be purchased in the class or brought from home. Prerequisites: Basic Knowledge of sewing skills and operating a sewing machine. Bring your own machine or rent at class for $15/session. Ages 16+ (min 2/max 5) Mondays, 4:30-6:30pm, 1/29-2/12 (3wks) Fee: $180 In July 2010, Zoya Derman was invited to participate in one of the fabulous fashion events organized by Baku Sunset and she presented a small collection of 4 dresses, modeled by her sister and friends. Then more fashion shows followed, and Zoya was hooked on the idea of creating and sewing for the public, the idea of someone benefiting from her skills. Be Creative Introduction to Watercolor: Painting Flowers Instructor: Laurie Engdahl, Artist Let’s paint! In this workshop, you will learn basic watercolor techniques of painting wet-into-wet and wet into dry. We will use these techniques to create vivid floral paintings, letting the paint flow in unexpected ways. You will also find that, as you become absorbed in the process of painting, the creative side of your brain dominates - - everyday worries diminish and you connect with a more peaceful inner self. You are guaranteed to leave this workshop not only having learned to paint with watercolors, but more refreshed! Watercolor: Open Studio Instructor: Laurie Engdahl, Artist For aspiring artists who have had at least a basic introduction to watercolor techniques, this open studio will allow participants to further experiment with various watercolor techniques and color mixing. The open studio is largely self-directed, but we will begin each session with a demonstration or prompt highlighting a technique or paint quality. The aim is to explore and have fun with this surprising paint medium! Participants will bring their own supplies, and we will provide the space and community! Class held at 12 Mudge Way, Rm 152 (min 5/max 10) Fridays, 10:00am-12:00noon, 3/8-3/29 (no class 3/15) 3wks Fee: $75 Laurie has been painting in watercolor as long as she can remember; her work often focuses on the New England landscape, capturing light and shadow and their influence on the landscape. More recently, she has been exploring loose and abstract floral still life subject matter with watercolor. Laurie’s art education has included numerous workshops with artists Amy Brnger, Betty Lou Schlemm, Serge Hollerbach, Nancy Howell, Paul George, Emily Passman, Maris Platais. In 2016, Laurie completed a Master of Arts in Teaching (Visual Arts) at Salem State University. Laurie has been in many shows and won numerous awards in New England. Exploring Watercolor Pencils and Beyond (virtual) Instructor: Anastasia Semash, artist Watercolor paintings are among the most beautiful and luminous works of art and also one of the most difficult to master. Watercolor pencils have made this process much easier. We’ll work with these water-soluble color pencils combined with a more traditional watercolor painting approach. You are also welcome to use other water-soluble materials, as well as ink and pens. Learn about watercolor pencils and expand your skills to new media and techniques. All levels are welcome. (min 5/max 12) 4wks Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30am, 1/9-1/30 Fee: $95 Anastasia is an artist and an art educator residing in Bethesda, MD. She recently relocated from Boston, MA. Her artistic journey began at a young age, thanks to the exposure she received from her father, an artist, who introduced her to various painting mediums. Anastasia got a master's degree from Saint Petersburg State University. Upon moving to the United States 12 years ago, she completed a certificate program in graphic design and illustration at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University in Boston. Be Creative Drawing Faces and Features Instructor: Trish Ng, Artist and founder of Artspark School of Visual Art Adult students will learn to draw the human face by focusing on features and composition. This 6 week class will start with a deep dive into facial features with a special concentration on eyes, noses and lips. One class will be focused on a ‘generic’ portrait to learn about the proper composition of the features to achieve a realistic human face. Our final class can be a portrait of the student’s choice or one of the many interesting faces available for reference. Students of all levels are welcome but some drawing experience is preferred. We supply all the paper and materials needed for this pencil drawing class. In-person classes held at Artspark studio, 41 North Rd. Drawing in Pen and Ink Instructor: Trish Ng, Artist and founder of Artspark School of Visual Art Adult students will learn key drawing concepts (such as contour/shape, light/shadow, texture, color) through various projects executed in ink. These classes will utilize several different materials over the course of the 4 week program including markers, dip pens and India ink, technical fine line pens and ink washes. Beginner and intermediate/advanced students welcome. We supply all the papers and materials needed. In-person classes held at Artspark studio, 41 North Rd. (min 3/max 8) 4wks Thursdays, 10:00am-12:00noon, 3/7-3/28 Fee: $135 Trish has been a professional designer for 30+ years, specializing in footwear, apparel and accessories for several local and international companies. She teaches drawing to children and adults. In addition, Trish currently teaches college level design courses in footwear and soft-goods design at Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Industrial Design Department. Throughout her career, Trish has utilized her creativity and drawing skills to express her ideas. She founded ArtSpark School as a place to teach the lifelong drawing skills she has come to rely on for career success and everyday enjoyment.

Stone Carving Saturdays Instructor: Scott Cahaly, Stone Artist, Scott’s Stone Carving Studio In this popular one-day workshop, you have the opportunity to carve your own stone, an art form that is not typically accessible. Beginners and experienced sculptors alike will be guided through the process of looking into the rock for imagery, carving into material, planning and forming a sculpture, and using tools. Hand-carving techniques will be demonstrated and stone carving lore will be discussed. Safety in the studio and stone and tool sourcing will also be addressed. You will leave with a stone sculpture in hand. Please bring a bag lunch to class. All materials will be provided. Ages 16+ Class held at Stone Carving Studio, 80 Loomis St. 2nd floor. (min 1/max 4) Saturdays, 9:30am-2:30pm Fee: $175 each option Options: December 16, January 20 or March 23

Scott graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in fine arts. While working as a resident sculptor at the Vermont Marble Exhibit, he carved a 5,000 pound block of Vermont Marble. Scott relocated to the Boston area where he started exhibiting his work in many galleries and universities. He is a member of The New England Sculptors Association and he has been teaching at several major sculptural institutions in the Boston area.

Have your children or grandchildren asked about past family history but you don’t have it documented anywhere? Belly dancing provides a good cardiovascular workout and helps increase flexibility and strength. Oscar has been a Tai Chi practitioner for more than 30 years. He has been trained and qualified by OHAA (Oriental Healing Arts Association) and he has been teaching Tai Chi for several years. Oscar started learning Judo and Chinese martial arts in Hong Kong as a young man where he was a Judo student of the coach who led the Hong Kong Judo team to the Olympics in 1967. He earned a First degree blackbelt in Shaolin Kenpo under the tutelage of Master Eugene Gaudreau.

Small Group Training (in-person class) Instructor: Sandy Morvillo The idea of a small group training is to offer a more focused and specialized workout session but also allows the participants to share the cost of an individual training session with a few people. Having a small group also adds accountability and comradery to your workouts. Class is held in person this year with zoom as a backup during inclement weather. We will use dumbells and bands to target the entire body and burn fat while building lean muscle. Great class for beginners or avid work-outers! Mark Pirrello is a level 4 NTS Certified Coach and USA Archery Instructor. In 2012, as a camp counselor, he volunteered to help out with archery and after that Summer he was hooked on the sport. The following Fall he started his own company, On the Mark Archery and runs programs for youth and adults through afterschool programs, recreation programs, corporate events and professional outings. He feels archery is a sport to empower people to achieve a new skill, lead to success and build character.

Beginner Pickleball Instructional Clinics Instructor: Kevin Martin, PPR Certified Coach Have you been curious to try pickleball, but not ready to join an open play session? Not sure how to swing the paddle, where to stand on the court, or how to keep score? Here is your chance to learn the fundamentals of the fastest growing sport in the country. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, racquetball, and ping-pong played by four people on a half size tennis court with paddles and a plastic polyball. Each class includes learning a new stroke, hitting drills, and game play. It’s great exercise and easy to learn! Equipment will be provided if needed.
