KUALA LUMPUR: The government has yet to fill the 1% quota of public sector positions for persons with disabilities (OKU), the Dewan Rakyat was told.

However, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic) said that there had been an increase in the number of OKU in the public sector between 2014 and last year.

She said 0.23% of the public workforce comprised OKU in 2014, with the percentages rising to 0.25% in 2015, 0.28% in 2016, 0.29% from 2017 to 2022, and 0.3% last year.

“Data shows that the number of applications from OKU for positions in the sector did not achieve 1%. Between 2019 and 2023, there was only an increase from 0.3% to 0.64% in the number of applications,” she said on Monday (March 4).

Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim (PN-Arau) had asked about the number of OKU in the public sector, and the challenges faced by the group in the service.

In a supplementary question, Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) asked about the number of OKU working for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and called on Parliament to increase its employment of those from the group as well.

To this, Dr Zaliha said the percentage of OKU in DBKL was at 0.5%.

“I also agree to possibly increase the percentage of OKU in Parliament,” she added.
