To the Management and Board of the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie, and the Cultural Departments of the organizing cities of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen;

We write to you as artists and cultural organizers, many of whom have worked with the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie, and others who are a part of the larger visual culture ecosystem that the Biennale borrows cultural and intellectual capital from. We express our opposition to the cancellation of the 2024 edition of the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie titled “Listening to Disquiet”, on false charges of Antisemitism against one of the invited curators, Dr Shahidul Alam. We also object to the unprofessional and disrespectful manner in which the Biennale chose to liaise with the curators via a unilateral press release. 

We stand in solidarity with the invited curators Dr. Shahidul Alam, Tanzim Wahab and Munem Wasif, and the larger curatorial team, and hold the Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie accountable for censoring Dr. Alam when he chose to raise his voice against the ongoing brutalities in occupied Palestine. By doing so, the biennale has exposed its hypocrisy and dismantled its own commitment towards a plurality of voices and freedom of expression. 

Our work in the cultural sector relies on the sustained circulation of ideas, beyond the limited time spans of news and social media cycles. We are concerned that, at a time when the cultural ecosystem should serve as a safe and generative space for dialogue, institutions in Germany and across the Western world are censoring those who choose to express solidarity with the Palestinian cause. In accordance with the 2020 Jerusalem Declaration which was authored by leading scholars in Jewish, Holocaust, and Middle East Studies, and which clearly defines what is and what is not Antisemitism, we reiterate that calling on the state of Israel to respect international law is not Antisemitism. We categorically reject conflations of support for Palestinian rights with Antisemitism and urge the biennale and the German press to act in accordance with the Jerusalem Declaration.

As artists and cultural organizers working in visual culture, we acknowledge the power of the image to inform us and to bring us into community. We bear witness as our Palestinian colleagues risk and lose their lives as they document the ongoing atrocities by the Israeli state. Their images and testimonies are calls for solidarity and action that demand a permanent ceasefire, an end to Israeli apartheid, and the violent occupation of Palestinian territories.

Amidst growing criticism about their extreme lack of diversity and equity, Western institutions have been challenged to focus on decolonized practices and representation in recent years. These invitations are often presented to us as “opportunities.” There is no acknowledgement that this skewed hierarchy is a result of imperial histories that perpetuate resource disparity in culture and education. 

While we believe in the power of collaboration, we seek to push the conversation beyond frameworks of diversity and representation, which in the absence of shared values and commitments to justice, care and community, result in Western tokenism. We refuse to allow our work and our participation to be used to legitimize Western institutions who are not committed to partnering with us on equal footing. 

Our urgent hope is that our solidarities will be strengthened by coming together in dignity and respect for all.
