Is Odell Beckham Jr. or Tyler Boyd a better fit for the Miami Dolphins?

The Miami Dolphins have been casually looking for their third-string receiver over the offseason. With the departure of Cedrick Wilson Jr., Braxton Berrios has emerged as the third option behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Berrios, however, will be relied on more than ever in the returning game given the new kickoff rules.

It’s no secret that the Dolphins have had their sights set on veteran pass catcher Odell Beckham Jr., as the 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year was spotted touring the South Florida facilities. Head coach Mike McDaniel admitted at the NFL annual meeting that an offer has been extended to Beckham, but there have been crickets on his end ever since.

In the meantime, free agent receiver Tyler Boyd has surfaced as a top option after a productive stint with the Cincinnati Bengals. Who would be the better fit in the Dolphins’ offense, Beckham or Boyd?

The Bengals selected Boyd with the No. 55 pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. Since then, the wideout has been a consistent force for the team’s offense as an eight-year starter for the orange and black. Boyd’s best season came in 2019 when he recorded 1,046 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 90 receptions.

Sitting behind Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the depth chart, Boyd has been quarterback Joe Burrow’s third-favorite target in recent years. In Miami, the receiver would fill a similar role alongside Hill and Waddle.

Beckham might have a more glamorous background after becoming an A-list celebrity following a standout tenure with the New York Giants. Boyd, however, has been the more impactful player in recent years.

After a tumultuous stint with the Cleveland Browns, Beckham moved on to the Los Angeles Rams. With the Rams, the former LSU standout had highs and lows, exiting the 2021 season with a Super Bowl ring and a torn ACL. After one year sidelined, Beckham made his NFL return with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.

From a production standpoint, Boyd recorded 667 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 67 receptions in 2023. Beckham, on the other hand, put up 565 receiving yards and three touchdowns for the Ravens.

Unfortunately, with Beckham comes an increased risk of injury given his history. Even so, the Dolphins have prioritized the former Giants pass-catcher over Boyd, as McDaniel is confident that Beckham still can shine for years to come.

If he continues to be indecisive, however, it might be time for the Dolphins to look into recruiting Boyd.
