JOHOR BARU: A 34-year-old Singaporean man has been detained by the Immigration Department here for overstaying in Malaysia for more than 13 years.
Johor Immigration director Baharuddin Tahir said the suspect was one of five people detained here at around 9.30pm on Sunday (Feb 25).
“We received a tip-off about some foreigners involved in the illegal construction of a shop on reserve land in Jalan Wadihana here.
“We found a Singaporean man there who has overstayed since 2011.
"We also detained a Bangladeshi man for violating his social visit pass,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 27).
In a separate raid, the department also detained 16 men from Syria, Yemen, Palestine, Egypt, Bangladesh and a woman from the Philippines at a popular Middle-Eastern restaurant in Taman Tasek.
“The suspects, aged 21 to 55, did not have work permits or passes enabling them to work here.
“All (those detained) will be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) as well as Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act for overstaying,” he added.
