Sam Walters is set for a return to action this week, but Matt Peet does not expect him to play for Wigan Warriors' first team. The forward has been named in the club's 21-man squad for the first time after recovering from a broken collarbone suffered in pre-season.

The 23-year-old has been missing since the setback in the 40-0 trial game against Hull FC but has now recovered and is available for selection for the first time since completing an off-season move from Leeds Rhinos.

But despite being named in Peet's extended squad for their clash with Catalans Dragons on Thursday, the Warriors boss confirmed that he was not currently set to feature. Walters will instead play for the reserves this Saturday, when they host Hull KR at Robin Park.

"He is ready to play, but if everything goes to plan, he will play in the reserves," Peet confirmed. "He's in the 21 as cover for our edge forwards because he would be next in, but the plan at the moment isn't for him to feature on Thursday but to get big minutes in our reserves and put his hand up for next week (against Huddersfield Giants).

"There's no doubt about Sam's versatility; the fact that he can play middle and edge forward would be very handy to have in our 17, but getting him good minutes on Saturday is the priority."

Walters' wait for a competitive debut has seen anticipation build after he enjoyed an impressive 2023 season with Leeds Rhinos. Despite his absence, Peet remains excited about the qualities he can bring to the Super League champions.

"We're all eager to see him out there for our reserves but also our first-team. He's fit in really well and has a unique skillset, he's just a good lad and he's going to be a good fit for us for a long start. It's been a stuttering start for him but it makes him and us all the more determined to make it work.
