Forecast to be prepared in future to see how many teachers are really needed, says Khaled

KOTA TINGGI: A forecast of how many teachers are needed will be prepared to deal with any oversupply of graduates in the future, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Higher Education Minister said that the supply of teachers should not be limited only to public schools but should also include private and international schools and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) education centres.

“We will be working closely with the Education Ministry to get their forecast of the needed teachers in the future so that we can address this matter. I have also told Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) to pay extra attention to producing TVET teachers,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Semarak Komuniti Kota Tinggi programme at SK Sedili Besar here on Sunday (May 28).

The Kota Tinggi MP said this when asked to comment on the National Union of Teaching Professions (NUTP) president Aminuddin Awang's statement informing of an influx of teaching graduates in the market.

Meanwhile, on the programme, Khaled said that UMT has proposed to build a Fisheries Innovation Centre worth RM15mil in Kota Tinggi.

“The centre will help in terms of increasing the production and income of the local fishermen, besides helping them with the downstream product of the fish that they have caught.

“The ministry has no objections on this matter, but they have to get budget approval from the Finance Ministry and Economy Ministry,” he added.
