Creating a successful city is no cakewalk, but AI can help us understand development patterns and identify areas that need improvement. By unifying data and creating a mathematical model for Digital Twin Cities, we can quickly assess the needs of a city and make decisions based on facts, not guesswork. At Digital Twin, we've already processed data for over 1200 cities and 3000 municipalities worldwide to make it available for everyone on https://dtwin.city. On the diagram you can see a reference city model we use to monitor city collect and integrate data, to build unique for each city digital twin, "what-if" & "how-to" decision Its purpose is to ensure the integrity of statistical records, to identify errors and peculiarities of the city, to make clear the relationship of individual indicators of the city to each other. Our aim is to offer easy access to unified time-series datasets for all locations, demonstrating that Digital Twin Cities is a permanent analytical model that can help answer fundamental questions and make robust management decisions. We are using the model that includes most indicators for population economy, ecology, infrastructure, and management. Though each sphere has its unique structure and behavior, all are influenced by external factors. With the use of AI technology, we can analyze these factors to make well-informed decisions and improve the city's overall well-being. At Digital Twin, our mission is not only to create a reference mathematical model for Digital Twin Cities but also to teach «ChatGPT-like» conversational AI to operate with analytical models and real-time data & facts more effectively.     Wow, what an insightful read! Thanks, Louis Bouwer PhD Eng., for sharing this McKinsey article on Digital Twin. https://lnkd.in/evrBwkPH The concept of a digital twin has always fascinated me, and this article hits the nail on the head by highlighting that it's much more than just a mere 3D copy. Instead, it's a powerful process that simulates an object's behavior, providing a deeper understanding of how it functions in the real world. The idea of having a digital twin as a companion throughout an object's life cycle is truly revolutionary. However, I can't help but wonder about the introduction of the term "enterprise metaverse" for complex systems like companies or cities. While it aims to optimize simulations, scenario planning, and decision making, I believe it might add unnecessary complexity to the concept. Yet, I'm thrilled by the possibilities it presents and how it could be further developed and refined in the future. I'm also curious about the examples used in the article, which mostly focus on digital twins of products. Don't get me wrong; that's impressive in itself, but what excites me even more are the potential applications for more intricate, non-hand-made systems like the social systems. It's an exciting challenge for researchers and engineers to explore these possibilities and uncover the full potential of digital twins. In my opinion, the true power of digital twins lies in their ability to handle countless scenarios and find optimal solutions in unforeseen circumstances. I firmly believe that within the next decade, digital twins will evolve to become more than just static data sheets or regulations.     Smart data searching in Saas DT Abstract The article discusses of a smart data mining search engine for Saas DT (dtwin.city). This utilizes tokenization and embeddings to create a three-dimensional matrix for better search accuracy. This version solves all the mentioned problems and can handle erroneous or indirect queries. The article concludes by suggesting future developments for the project. What the search is for: Allows you to quickly retrieve the required location data in a specific form. Expectation of the user from the search engine on our service:  When entering a location or/and indicator (and view type - Optional), it produces relevant results. Problems for the system: 1) Location can be written as "capital of something", "output multiple cities", etc.   2) Indicator as something generic: "population", "cash", "income", etc.   3) Spelling errors are also possible.  4) The requested data is not available in the database. Solution: A special catalog is prepared (indexed by location + indicator, For example: Helsinki; Working age population): 1) An off-the-shelf solution from OpenAI is taken. Their dictionary and embeddings. 2) The indexed part (location + indicator) is tokenised (turned into a numeric vector (array)) using the dictionary. An example: "Helsinki; Work age population" -> "Hel sin ki ; Wo rk ag e pop ula tion" -> 74, 46, 528, 13, 7897, 811, 39, 10, 1641, 152, 913. 3) Each token corresponds to its embedding (vector of token characteristics). 4) The whole directory is indexed in this way, resulting in a three-dimensional matrix. It is worth explaining. Embeddings have the advantage of being able to make "sense" (gross simplification). For example, if you put together trained embeddings: king + woman = queen, cat + child = kitten, etc. Search: 1) The user query is tokenized and the embeddings are added. 2) Since embeddings are a vector, their semantic similarity is found, between the query matrix and the matrix of each row of the directory. 3) The most relevant rows are found. It is ranked from minimum distance to maximum distance and 90% are cut off.  Result: Solves all the above problems. There is also a "Description" block that gives a small description on the internal data. Conclusion The search engine is able to find data even on erroneous or indirect (capital of something) queries, "understand" the context. And the user can get everything he asked for. There are possible ways to develop the project. For example: 1) to give the user not several options, but to understand from the query what he needs exactly and offer the most relevant information; 2) to expand indexing (to include years, scenarios, etc.).     Urban planning can be improved through the use of mathematical modeling techniques, which can help ensure thoughtful management decisions, scenario analysis, and optimal development of new areas in a city. This approach is based on the concept of a digital twin city, which involves creating a comprehensive mathematical model of a city that takes into account social, environmental, and economic impacts. To create a comprehensive mathematical model of a city, planners need to consider a range of factors, including the performance of key areas of the city over time, macroeconomic data, and transport flows of passengers and goods. The model should also cover the maximum number of factors for which there are statistical observations, and should be able to solve both direct and inverse problems. By using this approach, city planners can ensure that new urban areas are constructed thoughtfully, with optimal locations and functional purposes. This can help address challenges such as traffic congestion, lack of infrastructure, and loss of competitiveness of the city as a whole and its individual parts.     Some thoughts about the life cycle of cities and their decline ⬇ ⚔ A Battle Against Urban Decline ♻ Many cities in the world are like living things. They grow slowly, get very busy, and then start to become quiet and smaller. This is what we call the 'life cycle' of a city. Right now, a lot of cities are in the last part of this cycle – they are getting smaller. Why are these cities getting smaller? 1️⃣ It's mostly because there are fewer jobs and the big, powerful cities are taking all the money and people. This makes it hard for the smaller cities to keep their people. And once the people start leaving, it's hard to make them come back. 2️⃣ Another problem is that the big cities are growing mostly because people from other countries move there. On the other hand, smaller cities are losing people because there are more deaths than births. 3️⃣ When a city starts to get smaller, the first thing that goes is the factories and jobs. Then, the schools and culture start to fade away too. It's sad to see the things that made the city special, like a local factory or school, start to disappear. What to do? 🎉 But does this mean small cities are doomed? No! We can make these cities grow again, but it's not just about spending money on new buildings or trying to bring back old traditions. The answer is bigger than that. We need a plan for the whole country, a plan that thinks about all cities, not just the big ones. And this is where our company, Digital Twin, comes into play. We use mathematical models to understand these problems. With our data-based approach, we can help find ways to stop these cities from getting smaller. We can work out what needs to be done and help the people in power make the right choices. So, can we change how cities grow and shrink? Or is this just how things naturally happen? With the help of data and good planning, we believe we can make a difference. It's an important question that we need to keep thinking about.
