Happy September to you all! Summer may be winding down, but there are still plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine with all that's going on in the Bronx this month! Upcoming events in September include a Bronx People's Federal Credit Union (BPFCU) mobile branch event, our virtual monthly Ask UNHP session, plenty of "Back to School" community events hosted by our partners throughout the borough, and one-on-one financial counseling options with Ready to Rent and Tenant Support Unit (TSU) representatives. You can click on the shortcuts below to skip to the topics that interest you the most, and you can sign up online for any and all of these events by completing this form.

Stop by Thursday, September 7th to visit the Bronx People's Federal Credit Union (BPFCU) mobile branch at 2751 Grand Concourse from 10am until 3pm. Become a member or just find out what a community-based credit union can do for you! Join us to learn about the credit union's affordable services including low-cost accounts, free ATM transactions, and personal and business loans. Don't forget to bring a valid ID, proof of address, and $25 if you plan to become a member!

Have questions about financial or housing services? Then you need to attend this month's session of Ask UNHP on Thursday, September 28th at 4pm! Join us by Zoom to ask your questions in Spanish or English with NWBRC Director Jumelia Abrahamson. Monthly UNHP explores timely topics in more detailed, shares helpful information to attendees, encourages you to bring questions about other issues that are relevant to you. This month in the Bronx, there are still plenty of opportunities to receive "Back to School" resources like backpacks, school supplies, and books for the students in your family! UNHP is keeping track of upcoming community events on Instagram and re-posting them as Stories, so be sure to follow our account for the latest information. UNHP is making changes to the Housing Connect services that we offer apartment seekers. Many of you reading our newsletter have received our assistance in the past to create and update your profile for NYC’s online affordable housing lottery known as Housing Connect. UNHP is no longer able to provide a personal level of ongoing assistance with Housing Connect and is no longer a NYC Housing Ambassador. We encourage you to learn to use the site by looking at the videos found on this page and to enlist the help of a friend or family member if you need help with your applications due to technology issues. We also invite you to join Bronx AHORA, a group of frustrated housing seekers who are working together to get changes to the online housing system for more affordable buildings, greater ease of application, and more opportunities for in-person assistance. You may continue to utilize other UNHP services and resources throughout your Housing (search) and application process on Housing Connect. For those in Step 1 of the application process (see graphic above), our newsletters will continue to highlight housing lotteries that are in the Bronx and are truly affordable. Staff are also available to answer any questions you may have about Housing Connect or your applications during our monthly Ask UNHP sessions, which may be particularly valuable for clients at Step 2. For those who are ready to enter Step 3, our partners at Ready to Rent will be available to offer financial counseling and help you determine vital application information such as your total household income. If you do get selected for an apartment through the lottery during Step 5 and need help preparing for the interview or submitting your documents, you may reach out to us directly for personal assistance.
To summarize, UNHP no longer has the capacity to work with clients in the first steps (stages) of Housing Connect, but don't fear, you and your family will still have resources to efficiently continue your housing search and continue to apply - such as our monthly seminars and free appointments with housing specialists from our office.

Are you getting Ready to Rent an apartment? Looking for a new apartment or applying for NYC’s Affordable Housing Lottery, known as Housing Connect? You will need to review your credit report, identify your household income and have a budget to manage rent and moving costs. Or maybe you are renting already but looking for help to better manage your rent payments, create a budget, or improve your credit report. UNHP has teamed up with Ariva to offer free Ready to Rent financial and housing assistance every Tuesday at Refuge House. Are you a NYC tenant? Are you aged 62+ or disabled? Do your household earn less than $50,000? Then you may be eligible to Freeze Your Rent! UNHP staff are available at (718) 933-2539 to answer questions and can screen you to determine if you are eligible. The longer you are in the program, the greater the benefit. If you enter the program today, continue to renew and meet all eligibility requirements, the current amount you pay for rent today could be the same in 20 years!

New York City’s Tenant Support Unit (TSU) provides support to tenants in the Bronx community that may be experiencing housing-related issues such as harassment, purposeful denial of essential services, overcharges or possible evictions. If you are experiencing any housing-related issues and would like to speak with a Tenant Support Specialist, call UNHP at (718) 933-2539 to schedule an appointment by phone or in-person. A representative will be available at Refuge House on 9/14 or by appointment and at 45 West Tremont on 9/28. To schedule your one-on-one meeting with a specialist, please call or text (646) 574-5303. We also encourage NYC tenants to visit TSU's Tenant Resource Portal which is available in multiple languages.
