💡 Project flashback: the future system role of hydrogen Earlier this year, Common Futures supported Gasunie in developing their vision on the future system role of hydrogen. 🌐 Today, energy system functions like storage, transmission, distribution and conversion are largely fulfilled by electricity, oil and natural gas. With a reduced deployment of oil and natural gas, their energy system functions will dwindle. 🚨 Electricity alone will not be able to accommodate these system functions. Hydrogen will be a relevant companion to electricity in the future energy system. 🌊 Aside from its role in various end-uses, the molecule can support the integration of large capacities of offshore electricity. 📈 In addition, hydrogen can balance the energy system in time and space through its storage and transmission capabilities. 🔐 The broad applicability and characteristics of hydrogen also make it a valuable energy carrier in ensuring reliable and affordable energy supply, also in exceptional situations. In Korea, the first auction for hydrogen power generating gets started. 👍 The market for hydrogen power generation comprises both the purchase of hydrogen and energy generated by power plants that use ammonia, a hydrogen compound, as fuel. There are others who question Korea's hydrogen power action, but in my opinion, this proactive strategy and action will be the first step toward growth. China's six departments jointly released the "Guidelines for the Standard System of the Hydrogen Energy Industry," signaling a significant future development for hydrogen energy. Experts estimate that within five years, the industry could reach a staggering value of over 10 trillion yuan. These guidelines outline the key tasks for China's hydrogen energy standardization efforts over the next three years, systematically establishing a complete industrial chain standard system covering hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization. This system includes five sub-systems: fundamentals and safety, hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and transportation, hydrogen refueling, and hydrogen energy applications. The guidelines aim to implement the national decision on hydrogen energy industry development and leverage standards to regulate and lead the growth of the hydrogen energy sector.

The world experience of operating underground hydrogen storage facilities in gaseous form under pressure in salt caverns is more than 50 years. The development of hydrogen energy in the world has increased interest in large hydrogen storage facilities:  (1) for storage for subsequent consumption,  (2) as a product of storage of energy received from renewable energy facilities (solar, wind and others).  Underground storage in salt cavern is recognized by world experts as the most economical in terms of costs for medium-term and long-term storage of hydrogen. At a hydrogen storage pressure of 200 atmospheres, 4250 tons of hydrogen can be placed in one salt cavern per 250 thousand m3. When using storage for renewable energy facilities with electrolysis production of hydrogen from unused electricity, a salt cavern of 40 thousand m3 will provide storage of 680 tons of hydrogen for subsequent use for generating electricity during peak periods of energy consumption. I saw this graph today during a webinar by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) of the US Department of Energy (#DoE). US government officials gave details on the US hydrogen strategy. One of the highlights of the webinar was this graph. It illustrates very well the importance of the cost of #hydrogen as a driving factor for large-scale adoption. Going from left to right, as the cost of hydrogen decreases, it becomes competitive for more and more applications, enabling the decarbonation of these sectors. While some #hydrogenconsumers might be willing to make the switch to hydrogen at somewhat higher prices as indicated by the small circles above the bars, the bulk of the demand will only be enabled once the main threshold is reached. This graph, along with others, was displayed to explain the rationale behind the US government’s large-scale efforts to bring down the price of hydrogen, with the slogan “1-1-1”, standing for 1 USD for 1kgH2 in 1 decade (from 2021). An indication of the high priority that the Biden administration places on the development of the hydrogen economy was given with the announcement during the webinar that a Hydrogen Interagency Task Force (HIT) has been established at the White House level. This task force will coordinate efforts between various government bodies to facilitate the deployment of the national hydrogen strategy.
