Poor Things

Poor Things

A concise review of “Poor Things”, Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos:

“Poor Things” is a cinematic marvel that defies convention and plunges viewers into a world of absurdity, dark humor, and macabre intrigue. Adapted from Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel by screenwriter Tony McNamara, this steampunk-retrofuturist Victorian tale is a visual feast.

The film introduces us to Bella Baxter, portrayed by the incomparable Emma Stone. Bella, an experimental subject of the enigmatic anatomist Dr. Godwin Baxter (played by Willem Dafoe), is a sexual-innocent primitive. Her beady gaze and near-monobrow hint at a deeper understanding of the strange world around her.

Bella’s journey is both childlike and adult-bodied. As she discovers the pleasures of self-exploration, her language skills evolve beyond infantile pidgin English. She becomes beguiling, shocking, and utterly captivating. Dr. Baxter, along with his housekeeper Mrs. Prim and research assistant Max McCandles, guides Bella through this bizarre existence.

The film takes a surreal turn when Bella is swept away on a grand European tour by a cunning solicitor. The tension escalates as Dr. Baxter grapples with the inevitable: letting Bella go.

Emma Stone delivers a performance that transcends mere acting. Her portrayal of Bella is hilarious, poignant, and haunting. Lanthimos’s direction, with its monochrome shots and fish-eye lenses, adds to the film’s otherworldly allure.

While some may find it lengthy, “Poor Things” remains Lanthimos’s finest work to date. It generously invites viewers into its peculiar universe, leaving us both amused and unsettled. Stone’s presence, reminiscent of her brilliance in “The Favourite”, pulses through every frame. Watch Movie.
