Two roadmaps on sustainable energy security by second half of 2023, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya aims to introduce two new roadmaps by the second half of the year to ensure Malaysia achieves long-term energy security that is environmentally sustainable.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said these are the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR).

Anwar said the NETR will outline the overarching strategy and high-impact initiatives to expedite energy transition efforts.

“The NETR will be complemented by the HETR, which will pave the way for the achievement of an environmentally sustainable, long-term energy security in Malaysia, driven by technological innovation.

“These two roadmaps are targeted to be launched by the second half of this year,” he said in his speech while officiating at the Energy Asia conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Monday (June 26).

As part of Malaysia’s role in achieving global climate targets, Anwar said Putrajaya revised its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2005 levels.

Anwar also said efforts in achieving NDC targets have been incorporated in the 12th Malaysia Plan and the National Economic Policy 2022-2040 (NEP 2040).

“This policy document strategically charts the way forward and outlines key priorities for the energy sector in the coming years.

“It positions the energy sector as a key catalyst for socio-economic development and its progressive Low Carbon Nation Aspiration will ensure that the Malaysian economy is able to capitalise on opportunities arising from energy transition to remain resilient and sustainable,” said Anwar.

He also said the development of the two roadmaps will ensure that NEP 2040 is implemented successfully.

Energy Asia 2023, themed “Charting Pathways for a Sustainable Asia”, continues until Wednesday (June 28).
