Pram Set on Fire in Climate Protest at Australian Parliament

A baby pram was set on fire outside the Australian parliament in Canberra on August 10 during a protest there by the environmental campaign group Extinction Rebellion Australia that came in the wake of dire climate warnings in the latest IPCC report.

“We have to save our kids,” one protester says in this video, while crouching next to the ignited pram. “I want to be a mum but I can’t be a mum because the government is refusing to act on the climate. We must act now. Our children and our planet is in distress.”

Extinction Rebellion Australia protested outside Parliament House in Canberra in response to the IPCC report, released on August 9, which UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called “a code red for humanity.” The report concluded that “unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions”, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, or even 2 degrees, would be beyond reach.

The video here also shows the words “Duty of Care” being spray painted onto a wall outside Parliament House. The video also shows the same message on the walls of the Lodge, the residence of the Australian prime minister.
