IPOH: The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has arrested 10 foreigners for fishing illegally in Malaysian waters near Sungai Tiang, Bagan Datuk.

Perak MMEA director Mohd Hambali Ya'akup said the arrests were made at 9.5 and 9.1 nautical miles west of Sungai Tiang on Friday (Nov 17) at about 5pm and 5.20pm respectively.

"Our patrol boats discovered two C-class boats during a routine exercise," he said adding that both crew comprised Myanmar nationals aged from 20 to 36.

"Both captains were unable to produce identification documents and permits to use foreign crewmembers for fishing," he said in a statement on Sunday (Nov 19).

Mohd Hambali said the case will be investigated under the Fisheries Act for using foreign crew members without a permit and operating less than 15 nautical miles from shore.

"The matter will also be investigated under the Immigration Act for staying in Malaysia without legal documentation.

"The boats, fishing equipment and their catch have been seized and turned over to the MMEA investigating officer for the next course of action," he said.
