ABSTRACT

In the manufacturing industry, decision-makers are frequently confronting the challenge of evaluating a large variety of alternatives and picking the preferred alternative based on several competing criteria. Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches have proven useful in aiding decision-makers faced with many and conflicting alternatives in selecting the best choice. MCDM is a collective terminology for all approaches that emerge to assist individuals in making decisions based on their preferences. MCDM approaches use structured procedures to find the best among the available alternatives, and these approaches aim to reduce uncertainty in the decision-making. A variety of MCDM approaches are presented and applied in the industrial context in recent years. The results obtained by employing such basic and hybrid MCDM approaches have been shown to be promising, and therefore their applications have grown exponentially over the years. This paper provides an overview of multi-criteria decision analysis applications as well as trends in the manufacturing domain.
