Why this petition matters

Started by Mark Hyndman

From September 2023 (Less Than 12 Weeks Away) Govan Community Fire Station which provides Fire & Rescue cover to the local community of Govan, Cardonald and areas of Pollokshields within South Glasgow as well as supporting neighboring stations in the wider community of Glasgow City will have 1 of its 2 appliances removed from service.  This will increase risk to our communities and Firefighters. The removal of the second appliance will cut 10-15 firefighter jobs if this go's ahead.

This is a totally unacceptable decision for the Govan area which includes significant high-profile premises including The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, which is one of the largest acute hospital campuses in Europe, along with BAE Systems Shipbuilders, 3 Subway Stations, The Riverside Museum, BBC & STV studio Buildings and The Partick to Govan Footbridge which is currently under construction in this area. The proposed Appliance Withdrawal is also a key resource covering major entertainment venues such as Ibrox Stadium, Bellahouston Park, The Hydro & The SECC.

Govan and the surrounding area is also one of the most densely populated areas in Glasgow with more housing currently being developed, these flats will sit alongside numerous tenement flats and high-rise buildings already in existence.

The removal of this appliance will significantly increase the demand on the one remaining appliance at Govan by approximately 40-50%. This could, in turn, affect responses to Renfrew, Yorkhill, Knightswood and Pollok area of Glasgow. Moreover, this leaves many scenarios where Govan could be sitting with NO fire cover if this appliance is in demand in other areas. This is highly likely with SFRS also announcing the removal of two neighbouring appliances in Glasgow. This could have a negative impact on public safety as fire cover may not be guaranteed in all of the above areas. The demand on operational crews will also have an impact on Firefighter safety. Govans Firefighters pride themselves on their high standards and are passionate about protecting their community. These cuts could result in firefighters being fatigued and ineffective in our roles when you need us most!

The Scottish Fire & Resuce Service are looking to cut £11 Million this year and £36 Million over the next 5 years from the frontline - this will lead to a totally unfit fire and rescue service for the needs of the people of Scotland, with Govan being directly affected by this. We need to make it clear to the Scottish Government that these cuts cannot go ahead, and we need investment in our Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to continue to provide a safe, reliable and effective service.

Please can you sign the petition and support your local fire station and firefighters, so we can support you, it's our community!!
