How to care for your eyes before playing Holi

With Holi just around the corner and everyone preparing to celebrate the vibrant festival with great enthusiasm, it's important to be mindful of the potential risks it poses to our eyes amidst all the colorful excitement. To fully enjoy the festive spirit while ensuring the safety of our eyes, here are some practical tips to keep in mind during the celebrations.

Herbal or eco-friendly colors over synthetic

Synthetic colors are made from harmful substances like glass powder, lead oxide, and industrial dye. In contrast, herbal or eco-friendly colors are made with naturally grown ingredients like flowers, vegetables, turmeric, corn-starch, etc., which not only leave barely visible stains on the skin but also help avoid any potential harm that can be caused to the eyes during Holi.

Use protective gear to shield your eyes

Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from potential color splashes. Since children have delicate eyes, we recommend using swimming goggles for maximum protection.

Do not wear contact lenses

Dr. Mandeep Singh Basu, Director, Dr. Basu Eye Hospital says, “Do not wear contact lenses while playing with colors as they may get trapped in your contact lenses, leading to irritation in the eyes or even damage to the cornea. Wear glasses instead of contact lenses to keep your eyes protected.”

Rinse immediately if colors get into eyes

Do not delay rinsing your eyes in this case. It may cause irritation or extreme redness in the eyes and even aggravate with time. In case of harmful chemicals, it may lead to severe eye injury. While playing with colors, always keep clean water handy to avoid any mishap.

Splash and don’t rub

Despite following all the safety precautions if the colors still enter your eyes somehow, do not rub your eyes as it may cause more damage. Instead, it is advisable to splash water on your eyes until they clear up and the irritation recedes.

Oil around your eyes for added protection

Apply a thick layer of oil or petroleum jelly around your eyes to add an extra layer of protection. Coconut oil is often recommended due to its neutrality. A thick layer of oil will act as a protective barrier and allow colors to slip away before they enter your eyes.

Keep your hair tied

It is highly recommended to keep your hair, especially if it is long, properly tied up. Loose hair can allow colors to drip onto your face and possibly enter your eyes, causing a burning sensation or irritation. By securing your hair, you can prevent this and enjoy a safer and more comfortable Holi celebration.

Avoid aggressive play

Do not play with colors, especially if they are induced with chemicals, aggressively. This may lead to colors accidentally entering people’s eyes.

Avoid self-medication in case of irritation

In case color enters your eyes, do not put any random eye drops or any natural ingredients like honey, milk, or oil into them. Seek consultation from your nearest ophthalmologist for the best treatment for your eyes and to avoid any further damage.

Cold compress

In case of any discomfort or irritation post-Holi, use a cold compress on your eyes. This will help reduce inflammation.
