Men’s Soccer Returns Home to Battle Canisius

Saints Begin Stretch of Three of Next Four Matches at Home

LOUDONVILLE, NY – After playing seven of its first ten matches of the 2023 season on the road, Siena Men's Soccer (2-7, 2-1 MAAC) will finally have a stretch of home cooking ahead to look forward to. The Saints begin a stint of three of their next four matches at home on Wednesday, October 11 when they host Canisius (1-7-4, 0-2-2) at Hickey Field at 3 PM.

Wednesday's match will be aired live on ESPN+, with the "Voice of the Saints" Emmanuel Berbari and Patrick Meany on the call. Live up-to-the-minute updates will be available by following @SienaSoccer on Twitter.

After beginning the year with six straight losses, the Green and Gold have won two of their last three to start MAAC play at 2-1 – currently in fourth place with six points. After beginning conference action with a tight 1-0 loss at Rider, Siena has collected 3-1 and 1-0 victories, respectively, over Saint Peter's and Niagara. The latter came in the team's most recent match on Saturday, with freshman Ben Biton cashing in a penalty kick opportunity in the 41st minute.

Outscored 14-6 on the season thus far, Siena's offensive struggles have led to them faltering in four 1-0 losses this season. The Saints boast six different goals and eight different point scorers on the season, with Biton loading the way via a goal and two assists for four total points.

Siena collected its first MAAC weekly honor of the season on Monday, with freshman goalkeeper Bennet Glinder becoming the first Siena rookie keeper to take home MAAC Rookie of the Week honors since 2012. The recognition came after the Bremen, Germany native collected his first collegiate shutout in-goal during the win at Niagara, and tied a collegiate best with six saves in a tight 1-0 loss at Providence last Tuesday. Glinder owns a 1.25 goals-against-average with 26 saves in eight starts this season.

The Saints have never lost to Canisius under the direction of fourth year head coach Graciano Brito (2-0-1) and own a 20-11-4 all-time advantage over the Golden Griffins since 1987. Siena owns a nine-match unbeaten streak (6-0-3) and an eight-match home unbeaten streak (7-0-1) over its MAAC rivals, and has won three straight at Hickey Field. The teams played to a scoreless draw in Buffalo last season, with each squad firing off 15 shots apiece.

Under the leadership of second year head coach Michael Tanke, Canisius most recently played Fairfield to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, and had tied in three of its last four matches. The team's lone win came in the form of a 4-2 triumph at Central Connecticut State on September 4. Sophomore Michael Switala leads the team offensively with four goals and an assist for nine points, while goalkeeper Jack Petrie has a 3.00 goals-against-average with 46 saves.
