Co-Chair of 7 Experiences Summit 2023, Programme Leader BA Event Management, Event & Tourism Academic, & Creative Placemaker
The Experience Research Society (Experience Research Society (EXPRESSO) and Auckland University of Technology (Auckland University of Technology) are gathering experience researchers and professionals in a meeting to be held in New Zealand from the 28 November to 1 December (summer season). The 7 Experiences Summit (7X Summit) was conceptualised in 2020 during the lockdown period. It is inclusive as it welcomes participants from different industries. With the advancement of technologies, experience design is not confined to the creative industries, but to every industries. But not everyone understand what it entails or how to leverage on experiences. We're organising the 4th edition of the summit face-to-face. I met a legendary guru in experience research at the previous summit held in Brigham Young University, Utah, and this is what J. Robert "Bob" Rossman (co-author of Designing Experiences) has to say about his 7X Summit experience and the emerging trends with transformational experience: " The 7X Summit is a unique professional development opportunity for individuals interested in the experience economy. Research on the topic is in its infancy so it was interesting to learn about the many different lines of research being pursued by researchers from multiple disciplines. ย This is a very accessible and friendly meeting. Practitioners are welcome and there is much for them to learn at this conference. All presenters made an effort to point out how their research findings could be used to improve practice.ย ย Research on experience is increasingly focusing on transformations via appropriate experiences. Accomplishing personal transformations via oneโs participation in experiences achieves valuable outcomes not accessible without the personal involvement and co-production that is operationalized in appropriately designed experiences. To achieve transformation, you must be present and engaged. ย Pursuit of transformational experiences changes the intended outcome of an experience from simple engagement for pleasure to engagement with a purpose. These transformations are often not life changing in one session but usually occur incrementally over time via multiple experience occasions. Transformation always includes acquiring increased knowledge, skill, or some other desirable attribute. One is better at whatever is being pursued than before. ย Providing these opportunities and their desirable outcomes is an economic value that can be sold. It is a logical product expansion from experiences. " To find out how you could contribute to experience research and practice, Visit the official page for the 7 Experiences Summit: www.aut.ac.nz/7xsummit

I usually post โsuccess storiesโ here on LinkedIn, as many of you probably do. However, this time I would like to emphasize something different, starting from an experience that can be seen as a โfailureโ. A few months ago, I submitted a contribution to the R&D Management Conference. This conference is highly relevant to my research activity, and last year's edition in Trento was simply amazing. Nevertheless, I made the mistake of submitting a paper that was at a very early stage of development, focusing more on the track I was submitting to rather than the contribution I would have eventually presented. Reasonably, the paper was not accepted for the conference, and I was quite disappointed, considering the importance of the event and the fact that I had never experienced something similar before. However, after a few days of disappointment, I took some time to reflect on my attendance at the conference despite not presenting. The main reasons that led me to make this decision are represented by the pictures below. The R&D Management community is really made of extraordinary people and enthusiastic researchers, and it is one of the best series of conferences I have attended in my still short career. From my previous conference experiences, I have learned that presenting a contribution is extremely relevant and valuable for the development of our research. But beyond that, there is an abundance of social capital flowing around during the rest of the conference, including both the other sessions and the social events. And now, I can confirm that I made the right choice. Notably, this year's conference was hosted by Universidad Pablo de Olavide in the outstanding setting of Seville. One last, but extremely important point. Since I was not presenting, I had the opportunity to focus a lot on other works and approaches in my research field. Many interesting and well-developed papers were presented, but I would like to mention one that has been the most inspiring to me, also given its relevance to my research. It is titled โInnovation ecosystem orchestration: virtually or spatially enabled?โ and was presented by Dieudonnee Cobben. From my personal and humble opinion, if you are interested in innovation ecosystems, keep an eye on that. #rnd2023 #management #research

The theme "How Human Capital Drives Innovations: Building Collaboration within Ecosystems" has never been more relevant in today's rapidly evolving world. We increasingly realize that human capital - the skills, knowledge, and experiences people bring - is at the heart of innovation. Throughout our engaging and thought-provoking debates at the Astana International Forum, it was clear that this shift in understanding is essential for our educational institutions, particularly schools and academia. We need to transform our education systems to ensure they are not merely places for standardization but hubs for innovation and identifying new opportunities. While useful in specific contexts, standardization can stifle creativity and innovation if it becomes the dominant model. The traditional education model emphasizes rote memorization and standardized tests, valuing conformity over originality. But in our ever-changing, interconnected world, creative thinkers, problem solvers, and those who can adapt and innovate drive progress. Schools and academia should serve as incubators of innovation, promoting a culture encouraging experimentation, creativity, and divergent thinking. We must foster an environment that allows for failure and learning from it, as this is a vital part of the innovation process. We should encourage our students to challenge existing norms, question established knowledge, and forge their unique paths. Further, the value of collaboration within ecosystems, whether educational, business, or societal, must be considered. Innovation rarely happens in isolation; it is often the result of cooperation between different people, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills to the table. This collaboration can foster transformative ideas and innovations within a supportive ecosystem. We must actively nurture these ecosystems, breaking down silos and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to unlock our human capital's potential fully. These spaces allow engineers to learn from artists, scientists, and social workers, where diverse ideas and perspectives can cross-pollinate to create truly innovative solutions. The dialogue at the Astana Finance Days has been profoundly enlightening, reinforcing the understanding that our human capital is our most valuable asset. As we move forward, let's strive to transform our educational systems and foster collaboration within our ecosystems to harness the full power of human innovation. #innovationย #collaborationย #schoolย #academia
