SAC Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats” by an internationally acclaimed Thai ceramic artist, Vipoo Srivilasa.
His new series of sculptures draw inspiration from a Thai folk tale “Chaiyachet” which features a flamboyant and camp character named “Nang Maeo”, traditionally played by male dancers. In retrospect, Srivilasa realises that witnessing Nang Maeo’s performance was his first encounter with a drag queen. The way the character commanded the stage with their confident strut and exaggerated movements serves as a testament to the power of performance to transcend gender boundaries. Consequently, the sculptures are intended to be both lovable and warm, with a sense of the theatricality and flair inspired by Nang Maeo's performance.
