Last night as I was driving home from an outing, at precisely 11:51 pm, I saw this distressing sight. A kid, a beggar sleeping on the side of the road in Jdeideh, holding the roses he peddles to people in their cars. He looked wretched and the scene tugged at my heart strings. I just had to write about this reflection of our impoverished society and its deplorable state.
The fact that these beggars and kids are now more than ever planted all over the country says a lot about the deterioration and neglect we live in. Why hasn't anyone in power banned the thugs who abuse these kids and turn them to a life of humiliation and indignity? They are cohorts in the destruction of the children's lives who need to get help and proper education. Where is the humanity? Kids should be learning, playing, and be protected from the burdens of adult life. Not be subjected to a scarring and demeaning profession, if you can even call it that. They should not be abused in this manner and their rights need to be salvaged, like the rights of the rest of us that are being violated and squished daily without a second thought.
As individuals, we can make a difference in refraining from endorsing this corrupt business by not giving these kids any money. More significantly, the criminals behind this despicable type of human trafficking should be brought to trial and put behind bars, end of story. Clean our streets and save the children.
