About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours

Mining encompasses a wide variety of workspaces that includes head offices, regional offices, mines and mills, exploration camps in both domestic and international locations. This variety in workplaces can present a challenge to mining companies in addressing worker safety and mental health of all employees. From our collective experiences as women and men in mining, in all these varied workspaces, we have seen the issues, we have lived them, and we have solutions to empower a company’s workforce to transform a negative workspace culture.

Mine Shift has designed the DIGGER Training program to provide guidance on bystander intervention strategies that empower employees to address inappropriate workplace behaviours that include sexual assault, sexual harassment, racism, bullying, intimidation, and discrimination. Workers want to know what to do to address inappropriate behaviours when they happen to them or in their presence.

Learning Objectives:

After the workshop, attendees will have the knowledge and skills to become active bystanders (DIGGERs) in their workplace. The attendees will leave knowing how to identify inappropriate workplace behaviours and understand the extent of their impact on workers and workplaces. They will be informed on the inhibitors to engaging in a situation they are facing and how to overcome them. Finally, attendees will have a customized bystander intervention toolkit, practice in its application and skills to safely intervene when inappropriate workplace behaviours happen to them or in their presence.

Description:

This workshop focuses on building effective allyship skills and active bystander intervention actions that everyone can take to address inappropriate workplace behaviours. Bystander Intervention training is a strong tool to build safe, inclusive, and respectful workplaces for all workers.

The course is split into two parts:

Part 1 - Presentation: 2-hour presentation that covers the following topics:

• Male dominated industries and workplace culture

• Definitions of inappropriate behaviours and their impacts on the target, harasser, co-workers, and the company

• Five main components of an effective Ally in the workplace; Education, Trust, Sponsorship, Action and Community

• Three different types of Bystanders (Complicit, Passive and Active) and the inhibitors to and promoters of active bystandership

• Attendees will learn Bystander Intervention strategies through Mine Shift’s DIGGER program. This program was designed to provide guidance on appropriate actions while also including considerations around safety. Attendees learn that it is not always necessary to verbally respond to a harasser in the moment, in some circumstances there are more effective and impactful actions available to an active bystander.

o Direct Action

o Interrupt or distract

o Get a co-worker

o Get an authority

o Engage the target

o Record and Report

Part 2 – Scenario Review: 2-hour session on practical applications of the DIGGER Program where attendees are put into groups and presented with scenarios that highlight different forms of inappropriate workplace behaviours.

o The groups work together to analyze the impacts on the target, harasser, co- workers, and the company.

o They discuss DIGGER based actions to address the behaviour within the scenario.

o We include examples of scenarios that draw on our personal experiences, or experiences that have been reported to us but can also come from client specific incidents.

Mine Shift works hard to be inclusive of everyone in the room and recognizes most of us in the industry want everyone to be physically and mentally safe while at work. The course is designed to be empowering and educational so workers can be involved in the process of building a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace.
